SERMON SUMMARY

Reasons Not to Grieve or Be Afraid  (2 Timothy 4:9–18)

· Second Timothy was the last of Paul’s letters. In particular, it was the final letter he wrote to Timothy from prison shortly before his martyrdom. For that reason, Second Timothy reveals Paul’s deeply human side. It is especially moving because these were the final words of a man nearing the end of his life, written to someone he dearly loved.

1) Paul regarded Timothy as his spiritual son and showed him special affection.

· Having strong faith does not mean that we do not need the comfort and support of others. God often comforts us through people, and He often gives us strength through people. Some may think that pastors are never hurt by what church members say, or that pastors do not really need the encouragement and support of their congregation. But that is simply not true.

· In the kingdom of God, those who accomplish great things on the front lines are precious, but so are those who remain faithfully by someone’s side in difficult times. They provide practical help so that the person can continue the ministry well, and above all, their presence itself becomes a source of strength.

· Luke, who was a physician, remained with Paul even when many others had left him. Perhaps one reason was that he wanted to care for Paul’s health, since Paul was likely physically weak at the time. Carpus, who lived in Troas, may have provided Paul with lodging when he stayed there or may have taken care of Paul’s belongings.  *Carpus kept Paul’s valuable parchments, possibly including precious copies of Scripture.

· God never forgets those who devote the blessings He has given them to support His ministry. He will surely reward their faithful service. (Matthew 6:33) *Why the elder serving as missions committee chair set aside $2,000 every month.

2) There were also people around Paul who abandoned him or opposed him.

· Demas had once been one of Paul’s faithful fellow workers (Philemon 1:24), but during Paul’s second imprisonment, he deserted Paul. What is especially heartbreaking is that he left because he loved this present world.

*“Deserted” — ἐγκατέλιπεν (enkatelipen) = “to leave someone behind” or “to abandon someone.”

· Yet God never gives up on a soul whom He has chosen. Even if that person temporarily leaves the church because of love for the world, or even seems to walk away from God, if he truly belongs to God as His chosen child, God will work through whatever means necessary to bring his life back to Himself.

*“Irrevocable” — ἀμεταμέλητος (ametamelētos) = “not withdrawn,” “not taken back,” or “not revoked.”

· Alexander strongly opposed Paul’s ministry. When we do the work of the Lord, things like this sometimes happen. Satan may stir the hearts and influence the words of certain people in an attempt to prevent the work God desires from being accomplished. But God Himself can deal with those who oppose His work and cause them to realize why their words and actions were wrong. *Why the hand of Jeroboam, king of the northern kingdom of Israel, withered — 1 Kings 13.

· To carelessly oppose a person whom God has appointed is not merely to attack an individual. It is to strike against the God who holds and uses that person—like touching the apple of His eye. (Zechariah 2:8)

· Alexander was not merely opposing Paul personally; he was interfering with the ministry of the gospel. Yet Paul trusted that God Himself would deal with Alexander, which is why he said, “The Lord will repay him for what he has done.” (v. 14)

· At the same time, Paul did not hold the failures of those who had deserted or opposed him against them. (v. 16) He could respond this way because he was absolutely convinced that the Lord stood at his side. (v. 17)

3) Paul shows us what true victory looks like when the Lord is with us.

· When Paul was imprisoned in Rome the first time, he was released by the grace of God. But during his second Roman imprisonment, he sensed that this time his earthly life was coming to an end. (v. 6)

· Victory does not simply mean escaping death. True victory is having such confidence in God’s salvation that we no longer need to fear even death itself, because death cannot destroy the salvation God has given us.

· Paul was not praising God because he was certain that he would be released from prison. He praised God because even if he were soon to die, he was certain that he would ultimately enter the kingdom of heaven.

· The ultimate meaning of salvation is not simply that God rescues us from the difficulties of this world. Ultimately, salvation means being brought safely into His eternal heavenly kingdom.

And that saving grace will never be revoked. No matter what kind of life we have lived on this earth, and no matter how painful our circumstances may have been, God’s promise of salvation remains an eternal promise to us.  *Pastor Lee Yong-do’s message, “Death and Judgment.”
