Preparing for the Last Days (2 Timothy 4:1–5)
· One of the problems with the Christian life today is that our focus is often fixed on this world. This is not true of everyone, but even when people serve faithfully, they sometimes do so because they hope that, as a reward for their service, something blessed will happen in their own lives. Yet our life on this earth will never last forever. Just as Jesus came according to the prophecies of the Old Testament and accomplished salvation for humanity, He will come again to judge the world.
1) The world today is moving toward the last days.
· In Matthew 24, Jesus tells us what signs will appear before He returns to judge the world. First, He says that as the end approaches, wars and international conflicts will continue, and there will be disasters such as famines and earthquakes (Matt. 24:7). *World Wars I and II, continuing regional conflicts, and earthquakes along the Pacific Ring of Fire
· The more serious problem is that persecution against Christians will intensify. One characteristic of the last days is that the church will experience persecution because of its faith, while apostasy and betrayal will also arise within the church (Matt. 24:9–10). The most frightening sign of the last days is not war or earthquakes, but that people’s love will grow cold, causing them to hate one another and even kill one another (Matt. 24:12).
*America becoming like a battlefield
2-1) The first thing we must do in the last days is devote ourselves to preaching the Word.
· The gospel is the good news that Christ delivers us from this evil world and brings us into His eternal kingdom. But this does not happen simply because we live good lives on earth. It becomes possible when people hear the gospel we proclaim and believe in the grace of Christ’s atoning sacrifice on the cross.
· If people are to believe in the grace of Christ’s atoning sacrifice, be rescued from this evil world, and become citizens of the eternal kingdom of heaven, we must faithfully proclaim the gospel. *114,000 falling into hell every day
· The gospel is not merely something to be explained; it is something to be proclaimed. Whether someone accepts or rejects the gospel is not ultimately my responsibility. My responsibility is simply to faithfully deliver the message.
· However, this does not mean that we should share the gospel carelessly without considering the right moment. The expression “in season and out of season”—εὐκαίρως (eukairōs) and ἀκαίρως (akairōs)—modifies the command to “be prepared.” It means that we should always be ready to proclaim the gospel and then share it when the appropriate opportunity comes. *People are often more receptive to the gospel when they are going through major transitions in life.
2-2) With great patience, we must correct, rebuke, and encourage people so that they may live according to the Word.
· The word translated “correct” is ἔλεγξον (elengxon), which means to expose or point out what is wrong. The word “rebuke” is ἐπιτίμησον (epitimēson), meaning to restrain someone from continuing in the wrong direction. And the word “encourage” is παρακάλεσον (parakaleson), which carries the meaning of comforting and strengthening someone. In other words, we are to help people recognize what is wrong, stop them from continuing down the wrong path, and then give them the strength and encouragement to walk in the right direction.
· Sharing the gospel is not easy, but neither is correcting, rebuking, and encouraging others. In the last days, people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, they will follow their own desires and turn their ears toward things they want to hear (vv. 3–4). *The pains of childbirth—Galatians 4:19
· No one is naturally patient. Because human beings have a sinful nature, we are all prone to impatience. Therefore, patience is not ultimately a matter of personality; it is a matter of faith. We can be patient when we trust God and place the situation in His hands. Things may not be changing now. It may even seem impossible right now. But when we believe that God will accomplish His purpose in His time, then we are finally able to wait patiently. *God patiently bearing with a weak brother in community life
2-3) We must keep a clear mind in every situation and faithfully fulfill our ministry to the very end.
· The word translated “keep your head” or “be sober-minded” is νῆφε (nēphe), which means to remain alert and clear-minded. Spiritually, it means that we must maintain discernment and refuse to be shaken. Suffering inevitably accompanies the work of the gospel, and because of that, it is easy for our hearts and minds to lose their focus. *Why the eagle is called the king of birds
· Above all, each of us must fulfill the ministry entrusted to us. When difficulties come, we should not immediately abandon what we have been doing. Rather, we must determine to carry it through to the end, whether we live or die. When we do that, the reality of the living God is truly demonstrated through our lives. *Daniel’s response after learning that anyone who prayed would be thrown into the lions’ den—Daniel 6:10
· All of us need to develop the same kind of spiritual tenacity that Daniel had. If we cancel worship because of a little snow, stay away from worship because we feel slightly unwell, or immediately give up the ministries entrusted to us whenever something goes wrong at home, we will never be able to accomplish the work of God. God is not pleased when we shrink back. “But my righteous one will live by faith” (Heb. 10:38). *What ballerina Kang Sue-jin’s feet tell us
· When we endure to the end with spiritual tenacity and faith, we will eventually see the Lord at work. Nothing happens when we try to believe the Word of truth only on the basis of our own thoughts, emotions, and the facts we see before us. Facts cannot change the truth. Rather, the Word of truth changes our reality, our circumstances, and even the facts before our eyes. Faith that firmly holds on to the Word of truth alone enables us to see the Lord at work. *“I would rather wear out than rust out!” — Pastor Bang Ji-il
Discussion and Application Questions
1) Discuss the signs of the last days described in Scripture. As you compare them with what we see in the world today, share what you believe God is calling us to do and how we should live.
2) Share an experience in which you persevered with spiritual tenacity and faith and saw God work in your life. Then share one commitment you want to make in order to live with that same kind of faith again.
