Persecution of Those Who Desire to Live a Godly Life (2 Timothy 3:12–17)
· One of the misunderstandings Christians often have in their life of faith is the idea that if they seek to live a godly life, they will no longer face difficulties in life. So when someone is going through a difficult season, people may judge that person and think, “They must be going through this because they are not living according to God’s will.”
· There may indeed be cases like that. However, the Bible tells us that even when we are not living wrongly—and even when we are faithfully following the Lord’s will—we may still encounter difficult circumstances. Therefore, we should not carelessly judge believers who are going through hardships, nor should we ourselves fall into excessive guilt when we suffer.
1)Paul tells Timothy that those who desire to live a godly life will be persecuted.
· Paul demonstrates this truth through his own life. This had been true from the time he was in Antioch. In Pisidian Antioch, one of the cities on his first missionary journey, Paul preached the gospel but was driven out by the Jews (Acts 13:50–51).
· The same thing happened in Iconium. The Jews stirred up the Gentiles and poisoned their minds against the brothers (Acts 14:1–2, 5). It was even worse in Lystra. This was the place where Paul and Barnabas healed a man who had been unable to walk from birth. When the people saw this, they tried to worship Paul and Barnabas as gods. But the Jews persuaded the people of Lystra to turn against Paul. They stoned him and dragged him outside the city, thinking he was dead (Acts 14:19).
· In fact, Paul was not welcomed and served everywhere he went. Instead, he had to endure indescribable suffering and pain. What is remarkable is that even while going through all these things, Paul rejoiced. He not only rejoiced himself, but also told the believers who were concerned about him to rejoice as well (Phil. 1:18; 3:1).
2-1) Persecution is evidence that I belong to God.
· If you are seeking to live a godly life but are instead being persecuted and going through difficult circumstances, this can be evidence that you do not belong to the world (John 15:18–19). In fact, if you have lived your entire life without much difficulty and everything has always gone smoothly, it may perhaps be evidence that you belong to the world—or, at the very least, that you have not seriously sought to live a godly life (Matt. 5:10).
2-2) The reward for persecution endured while living a godly life will surely be given, even if it comes later.
· Even among those who believe in Jesus, many are still spiritually immature. People may promise that they will surely repay the kindness they have received, but when a decisive moment comes, they often make choices based on their own interests. God, however, never forgets our devotion. The Lord never forgets those who labor and sacrifice for Him, and He rewards them even in this life.
· Yet we must understand that these blessings come “along with persecutions.” In other words, they are not always given easily. There will be times when we feel hurt and go through hardship because of the Lord. Nevertheless, the Lord will never forget your sacrifice and devotion. *The reward received by Missionary Cheol-hyun Park, who serves in indigenous missions in Malaysia
· Of course, we do not always receive this kind of reward in this life. Sometimes nothing seems to happen, and the matter simply comes to an end. But if we do not receive our reward here on earth, there will certainly be a reward awaiting us in heaven (Matt. 5:11–12).
· To be persecuted for righteousness means suffering because we obey God’s commandments; suffering because we refuse to bow down to idols or compromise with injustice; or losing our reputation and facing social, political, or economic restrictions because of the name of Jesus. Yet what we can truly be thankful for is that through such persecution, we can be assured that the kingdom of heaven belongs to us and that our reward in heaven is great.
2-3) Through persecution, we can become more mature and complete in our Christian life.
· God allows those who desire to live a godly life to experience persecution because through that persecution our faith can mature and our hearts can become fully devoted to the Lord (Job 23:8–10).
· The problem is that simply passing through the furnace of suffering does not automatically make everyone mature or useful to God. Some people, rather than growing through suffering, become even more distant from God and fall away from their faith.
· The difference depends on whether we come to understand the benefits and purpose of suffering through the Word of God and overcome it, or whether we do not. Those who feed on God’s Word come to understand why such suffering has entered their lives. They also receive the strength they need to overcome it (vv. 16–17).
· Those who awaken their souls through the Word may be shaken for a moment when painful things happen in life, but they soon regain their spiritual balance. They are not easily shaken in times of crisis because their purpose in life is not simply to live an impressive or comfortable life on this earth. Rather, they live with a clear assurance and vision of the eternal kingdom.
· When God allows suffering in order to change the purpose and direction of their lives, they humbly kneel before Him. In this way, they begin to align their lives more fully with the kingdom of God. *Kenichi Ohmae’s “Three Habits That Change Your Life” (change how you use your time, the places where you spend your time, and the people you meet)
