SERMON SUMMARY
A Vessel of Honor Useful to the Lord (2 Timothy 2:20–21)
· Even in the kingdom of God, a vessel of honor is not one that is outwardly decorated with gold and silver like an expensive piece of pottery. Rather, it is a vessel that is useful to its master. Whether it is used to carry dirty water or clean water, the truly honorable vessel is one that is willing and ready to be used.
1. A vessel of honor useful to the Lord must first empty itself.
· A vessel that is useful to the Master is one that is “prepared to do any good work” (vv. 20–21). God’s good work is to bring sinners to new birth as His children and ultimately to renew this fallen universe into a new heaven and a new earth. To become a vessel for such a work, we must first empty ourselves and become clean vessels.
· To cleanse ourselves means to let go of the selfish desires within us and to stop living as prisoners of our own stubbornness. It means following God’s leading wherever He may lead us.
· There are two kinds of people whom God finds difficult to use. The first are those who are controlled by their own desires. For such people, fulfilling their own ambitions takes priority over living the life God desires for them. No matter how much God may desire to use them for His good work, they have little interest in it.
· The second are those who are filled with their own ideas. God desires to lead our lives according to His thoughts and purposes, but He cannot use people who insist on going only their own way. Even in the church, when things do not go according to their ideas, such people quickly complain. In order to push their own opinions through, they try to win people over, gather supporters around themselves, and persuade others to agree with them. In the end, this can divide the community.
· Even within the church, people who think that what they are doing is the most important and the most right often find it difficult to accept others, and as a result, they continually create conflict. * One of the most important qualifications for ministry is humility.
2. Before God uses someone, He first deals with that person’s life.
· Even today, God intervenes in our lives in many different ways so that we may realize that our thoughts are not everything and that our thinking may sometimes be wrong.
· One reason Moses was driven into the wilderness of Midian was so that he could completely let go of his own ideas. It was a time for him to lay down his own thoughts and stubbornness and learn to look to God alone in quiet dependence. * Why did God appear in a burning bush that was not consumed?
· If we live each day by the strength God provides and follow His leading, there should be no reason for us to burn out. If burnout does come, it may be evidence that we have been working in our own strength rather than in the strength the Lord provides.
· If God is allowing me to be pushed into an extremely difficult situation right now, perhaps He is taking me through wilderness training. Like Moses, He may be dealing with us until we are able to lay everything down and look completely to God alone. And finally, at the moment when we surrender everything and confess, ‘I can do nothing in my own strength,’ God will begin to work.
3. What we must do is humbly lay down our own thoughts and quietly say Amen to what God is doing.
· One common characteristic of people who may appear humble outwardly but are actually filled with self-righteousness is that they are constantly dissatisfied with the circumstances around them and continually displeased with the people around them. They often fail to recognize that some of these problems may arise from their own weaknesses. Therefore, instead of examining themselves, they continually blame other people and their circumstances.
· Even when we experience something unpleasant or hurtful, we should not immediately become angry because of it. We should be willing to think, “Perhaps there is a reason I am hearing this,” or, “Perhaps there is something I need to learn through this experience.” If we believe that even the words we hear and the situations we go through are under God’s sovereign hand, then what we can do is allow those experiences to make us more humble.
· Through such experiences, we must learn to lay down even the last traces of pride and selfish desire remaining in our hearts. When we do, God pours indescribable grace into our emptied hearts and fills our empty hands with the grace He has prepared for us.
· True humility is recognizing the mighty hand of God, entrusting our lives to Him, and seeking His help.(1 Peter 5:6) True humility is believing that everything in our lives is under God’s mighty hand. Those who truly believe this will naturally entrust their lives to God and seek His help
* ‘Jumagapyeon(走馬加鞭)’= ’adding the whip to a horse that is already running well.’
· The greatest blessing God gave Job was not simply that He doubled everything Job had possessed before. The greater blessing was that Job, who had previously only heard about God, now came to see God for himself. (Job 42:5) As a result, Job—who might have seemed to have nothing to repent of—repented. And instead of condemning the friends who had criticized and accused him, he prayed for them and asked God to bless them.
· The vessel that God truly uses in a precious way is not a golden or silver vessel beautifully decorated on the outside. It is a vessel that has been emptied and cleansed on the inside. Even in the difficult circumstances God allows in order to empty and cleanse us, such a person does not merely blame others or complain about external circumstances. Instead, he humbly examines himself and becomes a vessel through whom God can bless the world and the people around him.
Questions for Study and Application
1. What kind of vessel is useful and honorable in the house of God? Discuss what kind of attitude we should have toward the things God allows and does in our lives so that we may become such vessels.
