SERMON SUMMARY

The Power of the Gospel (Galatians 1:4, 10–12, 16–19)

· The churches of Galatia were established by Paul and Barnabas during Paul’s first missionary journey, when they left Syrian Antioch and traveled through Pisidian Antioch, Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe. Sadly, because many of the Galatian believers were new Christians, they were easily deceived by false teachers who tried to lead them away from the gospel and into legalism. Eventually, they fell into the false teaching that keeping the law was an essential condition for salvation. Through this letter, Paul once again powerfully proclaimed the gospel that we are justified by faith alone.

1) The gospel Paul preached ultimately seeks to fulfill the will of God.

· God’s purpose in creating humanity and the universe was for human beings, as His representatives, to rule over His creation and give praise to Him. However, that original purpose of creation was shattered by human disobedience. Yet through Christ, God restored the purpose of creation that had been ruined by sinful humanity. This is the gospel. (vv. 4, 11)

· We were once dead in our sins. Spiritually dead (Ephesians 2:1–3), we followed the ways of this world, lived according to the desires of the flesh, and did whatever our flesh and minds desired. As a result, we were objects of God’s wrath. We lived sinful lives on this earth, eventually faced physical death (Romans 6:23), and after that, judgment and eternal punishment in hell. (Revelation 20:15)

· No matter how painful the circumstances we may face in this life, nothing can replace or take away the joy of receiving eternal life by the grace of God. If we have received such amazing grace, yet today we remain overwhelmed by sadness, resentment, or a lack of joy, we need to return to the gospel.

2) The gospel seeks to reveal Christ in a person.

· God was pleased to reveal His Son in Paul (v. 16) and then sent him to preach Christ among the Gentiles. The gospel has such amazing power that it can transform a man who once persecuted the church into one who now proclaims the very gospel he had tried to destroy. (v. 23)

· Therefore, we do not need to be disappointed with ourselves or with those around us who are weak. We should not even give up on those who appear evil. Even now, the Lord is at work, seeking to reveal Himself in us and even in those around us who seem far from Him.

· When the power of the gospel is revealed in me, just as the persecutor who arrested and imprisoned believers became an apostle, I too can become a person of God who reveals His glory throughout the world. And when we look at weak brothers and sisters around us, we must learn to see the Lord who is still at work within them.

· Even when someone appears weak today, or even seems to be an evil person, we should anticipate what the Lord will do in that person in the future. The work of the gospel ultimately leads people, no matter who they may be, to praise God and give glory to Him.   *Augustine’s Confessions

3) The power of the gospel is revealed when we seek God’s approval rather than human approval.

· When it comes to the work of the gospel, we do not need to seek counsel from those who do not understand the gospel. Whether they were family members or not, Paul did not want to confuse the revelation and command he had received from God by discussing spiritual matters with people who judged things merely from a human perspective.  *“Flesh and blood” (σαρκὶ καὶ αἵματι / sarki kai haimati) = frail and finite human beings

· Paul says that even after encountering Jesus, he did not immediately go to Jerusalem to meet the apostles. Instead, he went into Arabia. (v. 17) This was because, rather than seeking recognition from the apostles in Jerusalem, it was more important for him to spend time in a quiet place, in direct fellowship with the Lord, so that he could come to know more deeply that Jesus was the promised Messiah.   *Arabia = the Nabataean kingdom, a broad region extending southeast from Damascus toward present-day Jordan

· Later, when Paul went up to Jerusalem and met Cephas and James, it was not because he wanted to gain their approval or make a favorable impression on them. Rather, he wanted to have fellowship with them and deepen his understanding of the gospel. (vv. 18–19)

· Even when Paul went out to preach the gospel, he did not remain in places where the apostles were already well known. Instead, he traveled to remote regions where he hardly knew anyone. (v. 21) What is remarkable is that even though Paul ministered in these outlying areas, eventually the churches in Judea heard about him and what God was doing through him. (vv. 22–24)

· The power of the gospel is not revealed when we constantly worry about what people think of us or try to gain their approval. Rather, it is revealed when we live with the conviction that God is always watching us and when our primary concern is to please Him.

When we focus on people’s faces, we become self-conscious and concerned about their approval. But when we look to the face of God, we become bold. If our goal is to please people, we will be shaken whenever circumstances change. But if our goal is to please God, our hearts will remain steadfast even when our circumstances change.  *“Coram Deo means to live in the presence of God, under the authority of God, and for the glory of God.”

Study and Application Questions

1) Explain the gospel in three points as presented in Galatians. (vv. 4, 11, 16, 17)

2) Have you ever experienced the power of the gospel being revealed when, instead of seeking human approval, you sought God’s approval and obeyed His will? Share that experience.
