Law and Gospel (Galatians 3:6–10, 15–19, 24)
· Today’s passage clearly explains the relationship between the Law and the Gospel. It explains why the Judaizers and legalists—who believed that people became members of God’s kingdom either by being born as descendants of Abraham or by faithfully keeping the Law—could not become God’s people through obedience to the Law. It also explains what role the Law plays in relation to the Gospel.
1) Abraham himself was counted righteous before God by believing in Him.
· The statement that Abraham was counted righteous by faith is based on Genesis 15:6. In Genesis 12, God promised Abram both descendants and land (Gen. 12:2, 7). Yet by the time we come to Genesis 15, Abraham still had no son (Gen. 15:2). God took Abraham outside, showed him the stars, and promised him, “So shall your offspring be” (Gen. 15:5). At that moment, Abraham believed the LORD, and it was credited to him as righteousness (Gen. 15:6).
· God then confirmed His promise to Abraham through what we may call the “torch covenant.” Abraham himself did not pass between the pieces of the divided animals. Instead, a blazing torch passed between the pieces (Gen. 15:17). This demonstrated that even if Abraham failed to keep the covenant perfectly, God Himself would certainly remain faithful to His promise.
· Abraham was not justified by faith because his faith was perfect from the very beginning. Even though his faith was imperfect, God would surely keep His promise, just as He demonstrated through the covenant ceremony of the blazing torch.
· In fact, in Genesis 16 Abraham failed to hold firmly to God’s promise and fathered Ishmael through Hagar, Sarah’s servant. In Genesis 17, he received circumcision as the sign that he trusted the God who keeps His covenant promise (Gen. 17:10). Yet when Abraham heard that Sarah would bear him a son, Isaac, at that same time the following year, he laughed to himself (Gen. 17:17). It was not until Genesis 22, when Abraham offered his son Isaac as a burnt offering, that his faith was demonstrated and confirmed by God (Gen. 22:12). But this does not mean that Abraham only became righteous before God in Genesis 22.
2) Those who have the same kind of faith as Abraham also receive the blessing.
· Those who are to become Abraham’s children must likewise be made righteous by faith, just as Abraham was (v. 7). God’s people are not those who merely inherit Abraham’s physical lineage as Jews, nor those who try to be accepted as righteous before God by living diligently and morally. Rather, those who, like Abraham, believe the LORD and are counted righteous by faith become the people of God’s kingdom.
· The Gospel promise God gave to Abraham was intended for “all peoples on earth.” The promise that they would be “blessed through you” pointed ultimately to the blessing that would come through Jesus Christ, the descendant of Abraham. * In Genesis 22:18, the singular expression “your seed” ultimately points not merely to Abraham’s many descendants, but to Jesus Christ.
· Paul then explains the relationship between the Law and the Gospel by comparing the Law given to Israel at Mount Sinai with the promise God had previously made to Abraham (v. 17). The covenant God had already established in Genesis 12:2–3 could not be set aside by the Law that came 430 years later.
* “Previously established” (προκεκυρωμένην / prokekyrōmenēn, perfect passive) = a promise that was established beforehand and whose validity continues.
· In other words, Israel did not first become God’s people by faithfully keeping the Law. They became His people because God had first called them by grace and entered into covenant with them. Therefore, the Law was not the foundation of salvation. It was given within the framework of a promise that had already been graciously given.
3) The ultimate purpose of giving the Law after the promise was to lead people to Christ.
· The Law was given to serve as a guardian. The Greek word παιδαγωγός (paidagōgos) referred to a guardian or supervisor who accompanied a child to school, watched over the child’s daily life, and disciplined him. His role continued only until the child reached maturity (v. 24). Therefore, the Law was not intended to be the final institution permanently ruling over God’s people. It served a temporary role until Christ came.
· The reason no one can ever be declared righteous before God by keeping the Law is that the Law itself establishes such an impossible standard. The expression “the words of this law” in Deuteronomy 27:26 does not refer merely to one particular commandment but to the Law as a whole. Therefore, anyone who seeks to make the Law the basis of his own righteousness must keep the entire Law—and none of us can meet that standard (v. 10). * “Words” (דִבְרֵי / divrei) is plural = the entirety of the words written in the Law.
· The Law is not a savior that makes sinners righteous. Rather, it exposes our sin and serves as a temporary guardian that ultimately causes us to wait for Christ. In other words, those who can only become discouraged and broken before the Law are led to turn their eyes away from themselves and look to Jesus Christ.
· God sometimes allows us to be broken before the Law as well. God did not prevent David from committing adultery and murder. Through those terrible sins, however, David came face to face with the sinful nature that was deeply rooted within him. From that point on, he came to confess, in effect, “I am not someone who can accomplish great things on my own. I am a sinner who can do nothing apart from the grace of God.” * The contradiction seen in the older son in the parable of the prodigal son (Luke 15)
Questions for Study and Application
1) What was the ultimate reason Abraham was counted righteous before God? Also, using the story of Abraham from Genesis 12 through Genesis 22, explain why the faith he had when he was first declared righteous was not yet a perfect or mature faith.
2) When you become aware of your weakness and inadequacy, do they lead you closer to Christ, or do they instead leave you trapped in feelings of inferiority and guilt? Share what you have newly realized through today’s message and any specific decision you have made in response.
