God’s Grace Revealed in the Gospel (Galatians 2:16–20)
· The Christian life can be described as a life of peace, joy, and hope. Even if I am giving myself sacrificially, if my heart is filled with fear instead of peace, anxiety instead of joy, discouragement instead of hope, and complaints instead of gratitude, it may be a sign that something is not right in the way I am living out my faith.
· What God desires from us is not simply good results or impressive accomplishments. He desires us to trust Him completely—to live without losing our peace in any circumstance, to look forward with hope to what God will accomplish, and to live with gratitude. Ultimately, that kind of life reveals Christ to the world.
1) A person is justified by faith in the Lord who died on the cross and rose again.
· The reason no one can be justified by observing the law is that all of us have a sinful nature (Rom. 3:10–15). The original purpose of the law was not to enable us to keep it perfectly and thereby earn righteousness before God. Rather, it was to bring sinful human beings to the point where they realize that they cannot stand before the law on their own and that, as sinners, their only hope is the grace of the cross (Rom. 3:20).
· In fact, the law was given to those who had already been called by God’s grace to be the people of His kingdom, showing them how they should live as His people (Ex. 19:4–6). Israel had already been delivered from slavery in Egypt and brought to God before receiving the law at Mount Sinai. The grace of salvation came first, and then the law was given so that those who had been saved could live as God’s redeemed people. The law was not a ladder by which people climbed up to salvation; it was the path on which God’s saved people were called to walk.
· The expression ‘I died to the law’ (νόμῳ ἀπέθανον, nomō apethanon) means that the law no longer has dominion over Israel. And, ironically, it was through the law itself that this relationship of dominion came to an end (v. 19). In other words, the law revealed that human beings could never be justified by perfectly keeping it; instead, it exposed and condemned them as sinners (Rom. 3:20). * the dative expression (‘to’) can indicate a relationship in which one is under the authority or dominion of another.
2) Salvation by faith also applies to the preservation of our salvation.
· The Greek word συνεσταύρωμαι (synestaurōmai), meaning “I have been crucified with Christ,” is grammatically in the perfect passive tense. This means that an event took place in the past, but its effects continue into the present.
· If salvation is received by grace in the beginning, but afterward can only be maintained by living in obedience to God’s Word, then a person would have to face death in fear, never knowing until the very end whether he or she would ultimately go to heaven or hell.
· More importantly, if that were the case, our salvation would no longer truly be salvation by grace, but would ultimately become salvation by works. We may have initially received salvation by grace, but our acts of obedience would become the determining factor that finally secures our salvation. * This is a form of neo-legalism—beginning by the Spirit but trying to finish by the flesh (Gal. 3:3).
· Neo-legalists worry that if salvation cannot be lost, Christians will simply live however they please after being saved. But although God does not cancel our salvation, He does intervene in our lives and discipline us so that we will not continue remaining in sin (Heb. 12:6, 8). * The reason for the pastor’s recovery even though he made no effort on his own to pull himself out of despair.
· The doctrine of the perseverance of the saints begins first with the truth that God holds on to His people and leads them all the way to heaven. As a result, believers do not abandon their faith but persevere to the end. The starting point of the perseverance of the saints is God’s preservation. In other words, God does not save me because I manage to hold on faithfully until the end. Rather, I am able to persevere in faith until the end because God continues to hold on to me. * The reason a little child is safe while crossing the street.
3) Even after Christ saves us, He continues to live in us.
· The Holy Spirit, who is the Spirit of Christ, dwells within us in the place of Jesus and watches over and protects every part of our lives. No matter how weak or careless I may be, if there is an event or accident that must not happen in my life, the Holy Spirit is able to protect me from it.
· Yet even though the Holy Spirit watches over and protects our lives, painful things still happen to us from time to time. This does not mean that Jesus has failed to protect us. God knows how painful and difficult the attacks of evil spirits can be, but when He has a good purpose that He intends to accomplish through those circumstances, He may allow them (Rom. 8:28). * God’s “good purpose” is that we may be conformed to the image of His Son (Rom. 8:29).
· Paul also says that the life he now lives in the body, he lives by faith in the Son of God, who loved him and gave Himself for him (v. 20b). The Jesus who lives within us has already conquered death, defeated Satan, and overcome all the powers of this world. He comes to live in us like an Olympic triple gold medalist who has already won every contest. When we truly trust Him, we are finally able to live with peace, hope, and gratitude regardless of our circumstances. * Why the Lord says, “Do not fear” (Isa. 41:10).
· As Missionary Heo Woon-seok confessed while serving among indigenous tribes in the Amazon, what God ultimately desires is not our accomplishments or achievements. He wants our sinful nature to be exposed so that we come to acknowledge just how stubborn and sinful we really are. If one word from another person is enough to make me angry and irritated, then I am still living according to the flesh.
* Missionary Heo Woon-seok’s prayer (I Am the King of the Pharisees!)
Discussion and Application Questions
1) Based on Exodus 19:4–6, explain the purpose for which God gave the law to Israel.
2) Explain why those who have once received God’s saving grace will never ultimately be cast out of that grace.
3) Why must we live by faith in Jesus Christ who lives within us? Share some specific areas of your life in which you have decided to surrender more fully to Christ so that He may truly be the Lord of your life.
